The ELSB application serves as a comprehensive multi-year pre-literacy curriculum designed for students who have not yet developed print and phonemic awareness. The software encompasses Levels 1 through 7, providing daily lessons and level assessments to monitor progress. Guided by the program narrator and main character, Moe the frog, students engage with lessons structured to facilitate mastery of 14 targeted objectives through a progressive sequence from simple to more complex skills.

The objectives within the program include sight word vocabulary utilizing flashcards, syllable segmentation through an engaging tapping game, and print awareness by prompting students to point to text as it is read. Additionally, students have the opportunity to collaborate in creating personalized avatars, fostering engagement and individual connection to the learning process.

Extensive research conducted over five years at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte has demonstrated that ELSB is a highly effective literacy intervention, outperforming programs that focus solely on sight-word instruction. The program is grounded in the principles of systematic and explicit instruction, incorporating scripted lessons, least-prompt strategies, clearly defined objectives, repetitive practice opportunities, and ongoing assessment measures.

The seven levels of ELSB each include five structured lessons, with all students beginning at Level 1. The instructional approach recommends daily delivery of scripted lessons in two 30-minute sessions. Upon completing each level, formal assessments are conducted to evaluate student progress. ELSB provides a comprehensive framework for implementing a multi-year literacy development curriculum.
